SolarReviews Expert Rating Score:
Our scoring methodology rates solar manufacturing companies on technical factors that are unlikely to be considered in customer reviews, offering consumers valuable insight into the actual quality of a solar brand.

Elite

SunPower has for some time been the leading brand of solar panels in terms of efficiency and electrical specifications.

Originally, the solar panels were made in America but over recent years cost cutting measures moved production to Mexico and Malaysia. The secret of SunPower has always been that they held patents over their “Interdigitated Back Contact" solar cells, known as IBC solar cells. IBC cells are the currently most efficient solar cells in mainstream production.

In 2020, SunPower as we knew it split into two separate listed entities, SunPower and Maxeon Solar Technologies. From now on, Maxeon will make the solar panels, and SunPower will run a retail dealer network selling integrated solar and energy storage solutions. However, the demerger has raised more questions than it has answered. Who actually owns the cell technology now? And will SunPower now start selling panels made by other manufacturers to reduce the cost of their systems?

The official reason given for the demerger is to allow each company to follow their strengths, but a skeptic may say that the real reason is that the manufacturing side of the business is unprofitable and is facing rising competition for other Tier 1 solar manufacturing companies that are now making solar panels very close in efficiency to the Maxeon/SunPower panels, all while using cheaper cell technologies. In short, it appears that the Maxeon spin-off is really about getting out of the manufacturing business before it lost its remaining competitive advantage, i.e. its leadership in cell efficiency.

Our concern now as a reviewer of the SunPower and Maxeon brand is that the contractual relationships between Maxeon and SunPower are not clear and Maxeon, as a standalone public company, is losing money. This factor has caused us to downgrade the overall brand "bankability" of SunPower and Maxeon. Their panels are still excellent (although now only marginally better than many other Tier 1 brands) but we don't know what happens if the Maxeon entity goes broke and we’re not sure if the 25 year warranty is being backed by Maxeon or SunPower.

Excellent system. Mediocre customer service.

Sunpower offers a superior solar system. Their problem is customer service. Disorganized, poor customer service, poorly informed employees and forget getting a call back. My system was installed in February of 2022. My solar service began in September of 2022. Communication was poor at best. Very disorganized and disappointing. Thankfully, the system performs much better than the people who run the company and make decisions.

Customer Service after the sale... Lacking

service after the sale... lacking UPDATE: Sunpower responded with a new email address to tell them my issue: customersuccess@sunpowercorp.com due to this review. One day response. I emailed my contact information... the mail did not bounce but the response has been zero after nearly 4 weeks. If I could give 0 stars I would. ******** The 3.6KwHr system I had installed directly by sunpower about 5 years ago. It worked fine, was done on time and was completed in a professional manner. Two months ago, the Sunpower monitor quit reporting data. I did the reset sequence and triple checked the internet connection to no avail. PGE reports my system is still working... just the monitor has quit. I sent an email to Customer Service who responded that response would be slow. I waited. No notice after a month. The sunpower mobile app says to send requests to mysunpower@mysunpower.com.... invalid address... the mail bounced. I have concluded that there is no Customer Service department. The system works, but buyer beware... if your system fails after a few years, you might not be able to talk to anyone about it.

LAZY, UNPROFESSIONAL COMPANY! Buyer beware!

Changing the review to one star because of the services that I've been offered so far. I have called customer support complaining about 3 of solar panels producing less than 25% compared to the similar located solar panels. I waited an hour on the line to be told that the solar system works fine (and that it's hitting the required daily average). This is BS. They are just lazy and don't care about their clients. I would give O stars! Stay away from this company.

DO NOT GO WITH SUNPOWER

You will pay tens of thousands of dollars and once you sign NO ONE will ever ask how it's going. A used car dealer shows more concern than these folks. Your system will begin to malfunction within a month of installation. Your inverter WILL break and you will get a surprise electric bill because no one is monitoring your system but you. SunPower will NOT notify you of a problem. When you call them they might sound concerned and will tell you a work order has been submitted. That's as far as you'll get. Seriously, that's it. If you threaten tostop paying the solar bill they might get back to you. If they fix what breaks they will not reimburse you for the double billing, one bill to solar and the other to the electric company. You WIL BE SORRY My system ws turned on in May, 2022 and never worked to full capacity. I received a solar bill for $217 a month AND an electric bill every month since. On January 5, 2023 someone finally came out and said it's fixed. SunPower said they would only send me $300 for my inconvenience. They're snake oil salesmen!!!!!!

Twice happy customer

We put 21 SunPower panels on our previous home, 10 years ago. They maintained their capacity well beyond their rating, and provided 100% of our electrical needs even though the array was specified to provide 90%. When we moved last year, we installed 23 SunPower panels on our new home and once again enjoying 100% service. We compared this performance to friends who used competing lower cost panels, and we calculate that we would have needed 30-50% more in our array to match the output, and would have seen faster drops in efficiency. If we do this again, we will use SunPower again.

Fell short every year and takes months for a service call.

Installation went fine but it was clear the first year that it wasn't producing near what they quoted. So much so that they came out and added more panels. That increased production but still fell short every year. They also told me I should never clean my panels, which i later learned wasn't true. Every time i cleaned them there was close to a 10% bump in production. But even with cleaning them every 3 months, i still never had a year of getting what was quoted. The biggest problem with them is two fold. 1. Their system doesn't notify you if it's offline. Mine was off for 6 months and i had no idea. I only learned it was off when i was using the app at work, comparing production to a friends system. 2. It took 3 MONTHS for them to send someone out to fix it, once notified. Very frustrating.

Lousy Customer Service

Lost an inverter in the first week of November. Had a technician come out and verified that it did not work. He shut it down, reported it, and told me that he would install a new one when it arrived. It is now the 8th of January, and I only get a run around from the customer service people. I have been told since the middel of December, that they are waiting for approval to replace my inverter. This is a lease. There should be no need for an approval. Just replace it. Case #03012892 fyi, I am entering 1 in the box below because I don't know my kw's.

Panels work great. Monitoring not so much.

Absolutely no problems with the panels. Electricity is generated as expected. Monitor stopped working and took literally months to replace. All is well now.

Go with telsa

The app is very glitchy especially on weekends. It freezes up and never know what the solar is producing. The cost savings mode only works 5-8 pm and not on weekends,my time of day use plan from SCE is form 4-9 pm. My friends went with Telsa and do not have these issues. My bad thinking going with a more expensive solar company would be better. Oh one last note you can no longer contact customer service on the phone over the weekends. And if you do call during the weekday get ready for a long wait and days for them to resolve any issue.

Good performance. Short waitlist

I own a system without batteries sience 2 months. The system was run from scratch for 2 months. Now (cold winter), my electricity bill+loan is less than my regular bill. Good news, because panels operate for 30...60% by max power depending on the weather (it’s normal situation )

All good

My sister and brother-in-law had SunPower do their solar system a year or so ago, and they were extremely satisfied. That is why we decided to go with Sea Bright (SunPower) installers. Very happy!

I don't trust my monitor that I have on my phone.

I don't trust the usage and generation that I see on my phone app. When purchasing I wish the sales person would have told me more about battery back up and the fact that it would not produce if the electricity was off. My system is a 12.X kw, I have never seen it produce that much.
